Sliding Spindle

The third tool belonging to this system is the sliding spindle. The grinded / sharpened sliding spindle slides permanently on the cylinder surface and determines the distance between engraving system and cylinder. The main objective of the sliding spindle is to control the cutting depth of the stylus, without scratching the cylinder surface.

For this purpose, the contact surface of the diamond has the shape of a spherical calotte and will also be interferometically checked. The nearly circular interference waves (Newton rings) show a tool in optimal condition.
